About Bradleys Lake

Bradleys is Lake 16 of what used to be called the Cotswold Water Park, and covers around 114 acres. Like nearly every lake here it is a flooded gravel pit. Digging for gravel around South Cerney began early in the twentieth century, and as late as 1939 there were only 14 acres of open water in the area. Today there are about 180 lakes across 42 square miles.

  • On the water: kayaks, paddleboards, rowing and sailing boats. No motorboats or inflatables, and no swimming in the lake.
  • Fishing is run by Watermark Fisheries. The lake holds carp over 40 lb, with tench, perch, roach and pike. Day tickets are cash only from The Tackle Den in South Cerney, and anglers need an Environment Agency rod licence.
  • Fishing writers say one carp here, known as the Tiger Fish, was stocked in 1946, which would make it one of the oldest in the country. Bradleys hosted a British Carp Championships semi-final in 2008.
  • The lakes became a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 2021. Around 35,000 waterbirds spend the winter here, including great crested grebes, kingfishers and smew. Swans nest on our lake.

A narrow stretch of the upper Thames between green banks under a blue sky

Local secrets

Things you may not have known about the Cotswolds, the lakes around the house and the towns and villages nearby.

A lake made from gravel

The Cotswold Lakes are the UK's largest marl lake system: 180 lakes over 42 square miles. They began as gravel pits, dug in the second half of the 20th century. When the digging stopped in the early 1970s they filled from rivers and streams.

The Thames starts here

The uppermost reaches of the Thames run through the western part of the lakes. Further east, Lechlade is where the river becomes navigable.

A new name

In July 2024 district councillors voted to support renaming the Cotswold Water Park as the Cotswold Lakes. That is why this site uses the newer name.

Rome's second city

Roman Cirencester, then called Corinium, was the second-largest city by area in Roman Britain. Its wall, built in the late second century, enclosed 240 acres. The amphitheatre lies under grass in its original shape and has only been partly excavated.

The oldest polo club

Cirencester Park Polo Club was founded in 1896. It is described as the oldest polo club in the UK.

A king at the canal tunnel

George III visited Sapperton in 1788 to watch the canal tunnel being built. The village is 4.5 miles west of Cirencester.

Sapperton on screen

The 1998 Cider with Rosie was largely filmed in Sapperton. The village is also home to the Arts and Crafts makers on our Culture page.

Cirencester people

People born in or linked with Cirencester include the poet Pam Ayres, the jockey Willie Carson, the composer Peter Maxwell Davies and the drummer Cozy Powell.

…one of the few spots now remaining on earth which have not only been made beautiful by God, but in which the hand of man has erected scarcely a building which is not in strict conformity and good taste.
J. Arthur Gibbs, A Cotswold Village, 1898

Writers and theatre people who lived here

William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Took a joint lease on Kelmscott Manor in 1871. Rossetti left in 1874; Morris kept the house until he died in 1896 and is buried in Kelmscott churchyard.
Percy Bysshe and Mary Shelley
Stayed at the New Inn, Lechlade, in September 1815.
Jane Austen
Visited her mother's cousin at Adlestrop Rectory in 1794, 1799 and 1806. Changes to the parsonage garden turn up in Mansfield Park.
Laurie Lee
Born in Stroud in 1914, he came home to Slad in the 1960s and is buried in the churchyard. His books are in a cabinet at the Woolpack, his local.
W. H. Davies
The poet of "Leisure" lived in Nailsworth from about 1933 and died at his cottage there in 1940.
John Drinkwater
The poet and playwright lived at Far Oakridge, near Bisley, around 1917, when Max Beerbohm was also in the village.
The Mitford sisters
Grew up at Asthall and then Swinbrook. Nancy, Unity, Diana and Pamela are buried at St Mary's, Swinbrook.
J. M. Barrie
A regular guest at Stanway House in the 1920s. In 1925 he gave the village its thatched cricket pavilion, still standing.
William Shakespeare
Mentions the hills in The Merry Wives of Windsor, where Slender's greyhound "was outrun on Cotsall".
Robert Dover
Started the Cotswold Olimpicks on Dover's Hill, near Chipping Campden, around 1612. The games were revived in 1951.
Dame Jilly Cooper
Lived near Bisley from 1982 until her death in October 2025.
Tamara and John Malcolm
Two RSC actors who found a derelict Salvation Army citadel in Chipping Norton in 1968 and opened it as The Theatre in 1975.
Ralph Vaughan Williams
A composer, not a writer, but the nearest of all: he was born in 1872 at Down Ampney, a few miles from the house, and named a hymn tune after the village.

Artisans and makers

The Cotswolds drew the Arts and Crafts movement, and the villages near us still hold the houses, workshops and graves of its makers.

Ernest Gimson
Moved to the Cotswolds in 1893 with Ernest and Sidney Barnsley, and settled at Pinbury Park, near Sapperton. He moved his workshops to Daneway House in Sapperton, built himself a house there in 1903 and lived in it until he died in 1919. His rush-seated chairs and cabinets are still made and copied.
Ernest and Sidney Barnsley
Gimson's lifelong friends. They designed and built houses in Sapperton, including Upper Dorvel House and Beechanger. Both brothers, and Gimson, are buried in the churchyard of St Kenelm's, Sapperton.
Peter van der Waals
Gimson's chief cabinet-maker from 1901. When the Sapperton workshop closed after Gimson's death in 1919, many of its craftsmen followed him to new premises at Chalford.
Norman Jewson
A friend and associate of Gimson and Ernest Barnsley's son-in-law, who lived at Bachelors' Court in Sapperton from the 1920s. His memoir, By Chance I Did Rove (1952), is called a minor classic of Cotswold writing.
William Morris
Designer and craftsman as well as writer. His summer home, Kelmscott Manor, is a few miles from Lechlade.
Where to see the work
Gimson's furniture is on show at The Wilson in Cheltenham, at Rodmarton Manor and at Owlpen Manor. Rodmarton and The Wilson are both in our guide.

  • Reviews. The Reviews page copies reviews from our Airbnb listing, with the guest's first name as it appears on Airbnb. If you wrote one and would like it taken off this site, tell us and we will remove it.
  • Hosting records. Our host, Netlify, keeps standard server logs, which include your IP address, to run and secure the site. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the site working and safe.
  • Analytics. Only if you accept. See the cookies section below.
